Below is a brief list of books that we believe will assist you in gaining a better understanding of your dog's behavior and temperament, how he/she learns and how to use scientifically proven positive means of educating your dog. These books are not based in technique, but rather facts surrounding behavior, and training. Your dog has the opportunity to develop only to the level of your ability to teach and to shape his/her behavior and temperament. The greater your education and understanding the greater your ability to teach your dog the behaviors that you desire, with a confident and attentive attitude.
Don't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor - This is an excellent book about better communication and teaching skills. It is written in an easy-to-read and entertaining manner.
How Dogs Learn by Mary R. Burch & Jon S. Bailey - This book is a practical approach to applying the science of teaching and learning to dogs and training.
Excel-erated Learning by Pamela J. Reid Ph.D. - An excellent book on teaching and learning theory and how it applies to dog training.
The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson - This book covers everything from how dogs learn, our relationship with our dogs and how to approach training from a very positive point of view.
The Body Language And Emotions Of Dogs by Myrna Milani D.V.M. - This is a must read! This book will not only help you understand your dog's behavior and emotions, but also how your emotions, actions and expectations help guide and shape you dog's behavior and temperament.
The Other End Of The Leash by Patricia B. McConnell Ph.D. - This is another must read! Dr McConnell has studied, and here explains in-depth an understanding of our dogs' communication through body gestures and vocalization. In addition, she explains how dogs respond to our physical and vocal signals and how best to use this knowledge in training our dogs.
Purely Positive Training by Sheila Booth - This is the book to read if you would like to understand how to use positive and empowering communication when training your dog through basic obedience behaviors.
The Perfect Puppy Book by Gwen Bailey - This is a great start for new puppy people. The author will help you understand the lessons that are important for all puppies to learn, and how to best teach them.
